Why Your Unique Gift Matters

by Carolyn Ellis on March 29, 2010

A dear friend of mine, Elyse Hope Killoran of Choosing Prosperity, sent me an email recently that contained a beautiful story in it. I found it quite moving and I wanted to share it with you because I feel it really articulates the intention of why I created Brilliance Mastery in the first place. As you head off for the weekend, I wanted to share it with you.

There is a very famous story about how choreographer Agnes de Mille (famous for revolutionizing dance through her choreography of the first true Broadway musical, “Oklahoma”) was coached through a difficult “dark night of the Soul” by the following inspired words from fellow choreographer, Martha Graham.

According to Agnes de Mille: “I was bewildered and worried that my entire scale of values was untrustworthy…I confessed that I had a burning desire to be excellent, but no faith that I could be.

Martha said to me, very quietly, “There is a vitality…a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares to other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.”

Let these words soak in for a few moments. If you feel them as I did, don’t be surprised if a few tears do come. I believe we are all here with a unique purpose. There is a partnership of our spirit that’s an important component of our business. Our business success depends on us building a strong, unshakeable emotional and spiritual foundation to support it.

The work I do with my private clients is the help them discover, align and express their true, authentic brilliance. (If you are interested in me helping you with that, please email support@BrillianceMastery.com to request an application.)

I would love to hear how this story affected you! What blocks you? How would you feel if your unique expression never finds its way out in the world?
